専門は植物分類学です。世界には27万種の植物が生育していますが、多様な植物がどのようにして生み出されていくのかに興味を持ち、植物における種分化の原動力のひとつである種間交雑に関する研究を行っています。静岡県には海岸から富士山まで多様な環境が広がっており、日本の植物の約半数である4000種が生育しています。各植物を観察しているとその形や生活史はユニークで、「なぜこんな形をしているのか?」「なぜこんな場所に生活しているのか?」という疑問が湧いてきます。静岡県に生育する植物の「なぜ?」を明らかにし、その面白さを発信していきたいと思っています。
